Ducks vs Avalanche Pick: Friday, Mar. 5th
Ducks vs Avalanche Pick: Friday, Mar. 5th: Anaheim has lost eight straight, with the last five all coming by one goal. This is a fragile club. Ryan Getzlaf between Maxime Comtois and Troy Terry is the worst-ranked 1st line in the NHL. They have no depth offensively or defensively. Jakob Silverberg never developed into the sniper they were hoping for. Trevor Zegras, the 9th overall pick in 2019 out of Boston University, looks like he could be special. There is too much onus on Cam Fowler to anchor this defense. Especially with Hampus Lindholm hurt. This team needs lottery picks. And they will get them. They have difficulty scoring and are okay defensively. Goalie John Gibson has not been the dominant goalie he was between 2015-2019. He is still capable, though.

The Avalanche have won 3/4. They have mounting injuries. Defensemen Cale Makar and Bowen Byram have gone down in the last week. Losing 2 of your top 4 defensemen is very difficult to overcome. They lost Erik Johnson to injury at the beginning of the year. Forward Matt Calvert has been out with a concussion since February 24th. And during their 4-0 win over the Sharks on Wednesday night Nathan Mackinnon left with an upper-body injury. We have not received the update on Mackinnon, but even without him, the Avs have enough to beat the Ducks, although I certainly wouldn’t take them as big favorites. I do think the Avs will play a conservative road game and cash us an under.
